Soap Berry is “ The origin of Buddhist Malas“.
Malas did not appear in the Buddhist tradition until sometime after the rise of the Mahayana (The Great Vehicle) in Asia. The first citation of the use of prayer beads occurs in the Soapberry Tree Sutra (Chinese: Mahuanzi; Japanese: Mokugenji). In this sutra, King Vaidurya of the kingdom of Nanda is beset with great conflicts: enemy attacks, diseases, etc. He begs the Buddha to give him a simple practice to help bring ease to his mind and to pacify the external discord. The Buddha tells him to string 108 seeds from the Soapberry tree (Sapindus saponaria) and recite the threefold refuge prayer: taking refuge in the Buddha as example, in the Dharma, the body of truth, and in the Sangha, the community of practitioners.
This powerful protective mala is made of 108/12mm plus 1 hand picked natural premium quality soap berries from China, the beads show hint of dark red in brighter light and get redder with use over time. The most common sizes of soap berry are 13-15mm, smaller beads usually cost more.

The Dharma is deep and it seems impossible for a person here to practice and achieve everything. Please, teach me the core of the Dharma.”
The Buddha replied, “If you want to remove mental defilements, make a set of beads by piercing a hole through one hundred and eight soapberry tree seeds, string them on a thread, and carry it with you where-ever you go. Recollect the names of the Three Treasures: ‘Namo Buddha, Namo Dharma, Namo Sangha,’ and upon completing each repetition of this phrase, move one of the beads from one side of your finger to the other, and in this way you will gradually reach one thousand times and even ten thousand times. And if you feel no mental or bodily disturbance, then you will be able to leave your life and be reborn in the Yama Heaven. When you reach the number of one million times, you should be able to remove one hundred and eight delusion-bound karma and thereby realize the fruit of eternal bliss.”
The king replied that he would practice as such…

Regular cleansing of your semiprecious stone mala is recommended. Gemstones absorb negative energy well and could also transmit the negativity back if they become saturated. To remove any unwanted energy, leave your mala in moon or sunlight, let it rest under a tree, using sound vibration to clear your crystals such as religion or meditation music.
Metal accents may tarnish due to its exposure to air and natural oils. If preferred, a polishing cloth can be used to restore their shine.
